Why disposals fail in Miami kitchens

A garbage disposal lives a hard life: fibrous food, grease, fruit pits, and in many condos years of light use punctuated by heavy guest seasons. Units that sit idle while owners are away seize up with corrosion, and the humid cabinet under the sink is hard on the motor and the seals. The classic symptoms are a hum without spinning, a unit that trips its reset button, a slow drain, or water dripping into the cabinet.

Many of those are repairs, not replacements. A seized flywheel can be freed, a tripped unit reset, and a leaking sink flange re-sealed. When the motor is gone or the housing is cracked, swapping the unit on the same connections is usually a single visit.

What we handle

  • Jammed or humming disposals freed and reset
  • Leaks at the sink flange re-sealed with plumber's putty
  • Loose or drooping units re-mounted
  • Dishwasher drain connection checked and re-secured
  • Like-for-like replacement on the existing outlet or switch
  • Old unit removed and bagged for disposal

Typical disposal jobs in Miami condos and homes

In the towers it is often a seasonal owner who comes back to a unit that will not turn, or a disposal that leaks into the cabinet and the building's management wants it fixed before it reaches the unit below. In houses it is an original disposal that finally gave up, frequently bundled with a dripping faucet and a running toilet in one visit. We carry the common mounting parts and can install a unit you bought or bring one at cost.

How it works

Send a photo of the unit under the sink, including the label if you can reach it, and tell us what it is doing. We quote a flat price. On the day we cut power at the plug or switch, diagnose, and either repair it or swap it like-for-like on the existing mount ring, outlet and drain. We knock out the dishwasher plug when there is a dishwasher, run water through, check every joint for leaks and leave the cabinet dry.

Where the line is

Swapping a disposal on existing connections is fixture-level work. If there is no outlet under the sink, the unit needs to be hard-wired to a new circuit, or the drain has to be moved or rebuilt, that is licensed electrical or plumbing work in Florida. We stop and tell you rather than improvise, and can suggest the right trade.

Your Questions, Answered

How much does garbage disposal repair or replacement cost in Miami?

We price flat-rate, not by the hour. Tell us the job — a photo or two helps — and we give you one upfront number before anything is scheduled. The price moves with whether it is a repair or a full swap, the horsepower and model of the new unit, whether you supply it, and how the existing mount and drain are set up. Whatever we quote is what you pay; there is no clock running and no add-ons at the door.

Can a handyman install a garbage disposal in Florida?

Yes, when it is a like-for-like replacement on the existing outlet or switch and the existing drain connection. Adding a new outlet or circuit, hard-wiring to new wiring or re-routing the drain is licensed electrical or plumbing work, and we will tell you if your kitchen needs that.

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?

The flywheel is usually jammed by something stuck between it and the grinding ring. With the power off, it can often be freed from underneath with a hex key, then reset with the red button. If it jams again straight away or the motor is burnt out, replacement is the better option.

Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?

Repair if it is jammed, tripped or leaking at the sink flange. Replace if the motor is dead, the housing is cracked or leaking from the body, or the unit is old enough that it keeps failing. We tell you which applies before doing anything.

Why is water leaking under my garbage disposal?

The three usual spots are the sink flange at the top, the dishwasher hose connection on the side and the discharge pipe at the back. The first two are often re-seals; a leak from the body of the unit itself means the disposal needs replacing.

Does a handyman need a license in Florida?

Not for minor repairs. Florida does not require a state contractor licence for handyman work such as mounting, assembly, drywall patching, caulking, door adjustment and swapping like-for-like fixtures. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing and structural work must be done by licensed contractors. Double Handyman sticks to the minor-repair side of that line and tells you plainly when a job belongs with a licensed trade.
