Hurricane Shutter Service in Miami

Double Handyman puts up and takes down existing hurricane shutters across Miami-Dade and South Broward: storm panels hung before a storm and stored after it, accordion shutters closed and opened for owners who are away, and minor repairs to existing accordion shutters such as freeing stiff tracks, replacing locks, wheels and missing hardware. Flat-rate price before booking. New or replacement shutter installs need a permit and a licensed contractor, and we do not do them.

Why shutter service is a Miami season job

Hurricane season runs from June through November, and every time a storm turns toward South Florida the same scramble starts: heavy aluminium or steel panels need to come out of the closet and go up on every opening, accordion shutters that have not moved since last year need to close and lock, and owners who are out of town need someone they trust to do it. Then, once the storm passes, everything has to come down so the home has light and air again.

Panels are heavy, sharp-edged and awkward on a ladder, wing nuts and studs corrode in salt air, and accordion tracks fill with sand and seize. Doing this calmly before the rush, with the panels labelled and the hardware checked, is far easier than doing it the day before landfall.

What we handle

  • Putting up existing storm panels on their existing tracks and studs
  • Taking panels down after the storm and storing them
  • Labelling panels by opening so next time is faster
  • Closing and opening accordion shutters for owners who are away
  • Freeing and lubricating stiff accordion tracks
  • Replacing locks, wheels and missing or corroded hardware on existing shutters

Typical shutter jobs in Miami condos and homes

In condo towers it is mostly accordion shutters on balcony doors and windows, closed for seasonal owners who have left for the summer or who are watching a storm from abroad. Some associations have rules about shutters for units left empty during hurricane season, so check your building's rules and tell us what they require. In houses in North Miami, Kendall, Hollywood and Pembroke Pines it is usually storm panels: getting them out, matching them to the right openings and putting them up before the deadline, then back into storage afterwards.

How it works

Book before the season or as soon as a storm is on the map. Send photos of the shutters or panels and tell us how many openings there are. We quote a flat price for put-up, take-down or both. On the day we check the tracks, studs and hardware, hang or close everything securely, and send you photos of each opening. Before a named storm, schedules fill quickly, so the earlier you book, the better your window.

Where the line is

We work with shutters that are already installed and approved on your home. Installing new shutters, replacing a shutter system, or adding new tracks and anchors to the building needs a permit, approved products and a licensed contractor in Florida, and we will say so. Structural damage to shutters after a storm is also a job for that contractor.

Where we do this most

Your Questions, Answered

How much does hurricane shutter put-up and take-down cost in Miami?

We price flat-rate, not by the hour. Tell us the job — a photo or two helps — and we give you one upfront number before anything is scheduled. The price moves with the number of openings, panel or accordion type, the height of the openings and access, and whether you need put-up, take-down or both. Whatever we quote is what you pay; there is no clock running and no add-ons at the door.

Can you put up my hurricane shutters before a storm?

Yes, if the shutters are already installed or the panels and tracks already exist on your home. We hang storm panels, close accordion shutters and send you photos. Book early; once a storm is named, the schedule fills quickly.

Do you install new hurricane shutters?

No. New or replacement shutter installs in Florida need a permit, approved products and a licensed contractor. We service shutters you already have: putting them up, taking them down and minor repairs.

Can you fix an accordion shutter that will not close?

Often, yes. Stiff accordions are usually a track full of sand and dried lubricant, a broken wheel or a damaged lock. We clean and lubricate the track and replace small parts on the existing shutter. A bent or structurally damaged shutter needs a shutter contractor.

Can you close my condo shutters while I am out of town?

Yes. We coordinate access with your management office or concierge, close and lock the shutters, and send photos. Check your association's rules for empty units during hurricane season so we follow them.

Do you work in condos and high-rises with building rules?

Yes, and most of our work is in them. We carry insurance and can send a certificate of insurance to your management office, we work inside the building's permitted hours, use the service elevator when the building requires it, and protect common hallways on the way in and out.
