Why camera set-up is harder than the box suggests

The cameras are designed to be easy, and the hard part is everything around them. Miami houses are stucco over concrete block, so a camera bracket needs masonry anchors, not the plastic plugs in the box. Condo walls are concrete that blocks Wi-Fi, so a camera on the balcony or at the front door can show a full signal at set-up and drop out once it is mounted. And a camera aimed a little too high spends the summer recording palm fronds and glare off the pool.

We mount for the wall you have, check the Wi-Fi at the exact spot before drilling, set the angle and motion zones so you get alerts for people rather than every passing car, and finish the app side so the system works on your phone and anyone else's who needs it.

What we install and set up

  • Video doorbells, battery or on existing doorbell wiring
  • Battery and solar cameras for entries, side yards and gates
  • Plug-in Wi-Fi cameras indoors and on covered patios near an existing outlet
  • Indoor cameras for pets, nannies and empty seasonal units
  • Wi-Fi checks and mesh nodes where the signal does not reach
  • App set-up, motion zones, shared access and notifications

Typical camera jobs in Miami condos and homes

Seasonal owners in Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour and Aventura want indoor cameras and a doorbell they can check from New York or abroad, plus an alert if someone enters while the unit is empty. Single-family homes in Doral, Pembroke Pines and Kendall usually want a doorbell plus two to four battery or solar cameras covering the driveway, the side gate and the back patio. Landlords sometimes want a doorbell at a duplex entry so they can see deliveries and visitors.

In condos, the first question is what the association allows. Many buildings restrict cameras that look into common hallways or are mounted on the corridor side of a unit door. We will ask you to check the rules first, and an interior-facing camera or a peephole-style doorbell is often the accepted answer.

How it works

Tell us which cameras you have or are thinking of buying and send photos of where each one should go. We quote a flat price for the set. On the day we test the Wi-Fi at each location, mount the brackets into block, stucco or studs, aim and secure each camera, connect everything to your account, set motion zones and alerts and walk you through the app. If your Wi-Fi does not reach a spot, we tell you and can place a mesh node where it helps.

Where the line is

Mounting and setting up plug-in, battery and Wi-Fi cameras and doorbells on existing power is handyman work. Hard-wired or PoE camera systems with a recorder, monitored alarm systems and anything that needs new low-voltage cable runs belong with a licensed low-voltage or alarm contractor in Florida, and a floodlight camera where there is no existing fixture or a new outlet outside needs a licensed electrician. We will say so up front.

Your Questions, Answered

How much does security camera installation cost in Miami?

We price flat-rate, not by the hour. Tell us the job — a photo or two helps — and we give you one upfront number before anything is scheduled. The price moves with how many cameras and doorbells, what each one mounts to, how high the mounts are and whether Wi-Fi coverage needs extending. Whatever we quote is what you pay; there is no clock running and no add-ons at the door.

Can a handyman install security cameras in Florida?

Yes, for plug-in, battery and Wi-Fi cameras and video doorbells on existing power. Hard-wired camera systems, monitored alarms and new low-voltage wiring are licensed work in Florida, and new outlets or fixtures need an electrician. Double Handyman stays on the Wi-Fi and battery side and refers the rest.

Can I put a camera or video doorbell on my condo door?

It depends on your association. Many Miami buildings restrict cameras that face common hallways or are mounted on the corridor side of the door. Check with management first; an inside-mounted camera or a peephole-style doorbell is often allowed when an exterior one is not.

Do battery cameras work in Miami heat?

Yes, most current models are rated for outdoor heat and rain, but batteries drain faster in direct sun and constant motion. We mount them in shade where possible and set motion zones so they are not triggered by every palm frond, which keeps recharging to a reasonable schedule.

Why does my camera keep going offline?

Usually weak Wi-Fi at the camera's location. Concrete walls in Miami buildings block the signal more than people expect. We test the signal where the camera will live and add a mesh node or move the camera when needed.

Do you work in condos and high-rises with building rules?

Yes, and most of our work is in them. We carry insurance and can send a certificate of insurance to your management office, we work inside the building's permitted hours, use the service elevator when the building requires it, and protect common hallways on the way in and out.
